Plot: Mingo County, West Virginia, 1920. Coal miners, struggling to form a union, are up against company operators and the gun thugs of the notorious Baldwin-Felts detective agency. Black and Italian miners, brought in by the company to break the strike, are caught between the two forces. UMWA organizer and dual-card Wobbly Joe Kenehan determines to bring the local, Black, and Italian groups together. While Kenehan and his story are fictional, the setting and the dramatic climax are historical; Sid Hatfield, Cabell C. Testerman, C. E. Lively and the Felts brothers were real-life participants, and ‘Few Clothes’ is based on a character active several years previously.

Plot: The relationship between two brothers, a father trying to connect with his sons and the young woman who gets between the three of them. Plot: Looping, chugging and barreling by, the trains in Benning’s latest monumental film map a stunning topography and a history of American development. RR comes three decades after Benning and Bette Gordon made The United States of America (1975), a cinematic journey along the country’s interstates that is keenly aware “of superhighways and railroad tracks as American public symbols.” A political essay responding to the economic histories of trains as instruments in a culture of hyper-consumption, RR articulates its concern most explicitly when Eisenhower’s military-industrial complex speech is heard as a mile long coal train passes through eastern Wyoming. Benning spent two and a half years collecting two hundred and sixteen shots of trains, forty-three of which appear in RR. The locomotives’ varying colors, speeds, vectors, and reverberations are charged with visual thrills, romance and a nostalgia heightened by Benning’s declaration that this will be his last work in 16mm film.

Plot: Proof that even geniuses have their off days, this is a colossal disappointment after El Valley Centro and Los, the first two parts of Benning’s ‘California Trilogy’ – both among the greatest turn of the century American films. Sogobi is structurally identical, comprising 35 static 150-second shots that examine the disparate geography of California. But, unlike the earlier films, this is much less concerned with man’s interaction with the environment – most of the images this time show nature in the raw. With only intermittent flashes of the anger, intelligence and wit that characterised the other two movies, tedium sets in early. For completists only.

Plot: In “The Wrap-Around Story”, after a man leaves his mistress in their motel room, his wife sneaks in with a gun and ties the mistress up and forces the mistress to listen to two stories and critique them. The first is “The Box,” and involves three hookers arriving in a mining town to move into a theater they bought to be their whorehouse. The town’s mayor is upset, as he governs all the morals in the town. He has a box with a “thing” in it that people are afraid of: bad news for the hookers. The second is “Thing in a Jar,” in which a woman keeps having vivid nightmares and visions of her husband mutilating her. She has a friend who encourages her to leave her husband, but it may not be that easy.

Plot: The American independent film maker James Benning has built up over the period of almost 40 years an oeuvre focusing on places and time. In long, unedited scenes, he shows his vision of, or amazement at, phenomena or landscapes that have long been considered a part of everyday reality. In Ruhr, Benning allows his camera to roam the Ruhr Valley in Germany, where his parents came from. There are six meticulously framed takes at places where apparently little happens: a tunnel with a single car, a forest where planes race overhead, a factory with glowing rods of steel, a mosque with a hundred bowing heads, a wall where someone takes up arms against graffiti and an enormous chimney from which smoke is occasionally belched out. They seem to come from a different reality, but are also familiar: worrying and reassuring at the same time.
